Suggestions for Summer Reading Activities

Try to read a book every week.

Keep a record of what you read. In a journal, write the author's name and the title of the book, and answer some of the following questions:

1. How long did it take to read the book?
2. Who are the main characters? Describe them.
3. What type of story is it? Adventure? Humor? Mystery?
4. Write down your favorite quote(s).
5. Do you recommend the book? Why?
6. Draw a picture of your favorite character from the book.

In your journal, practice writing a bibliography. Write down the author's name, the title (underlined), place of publication, the publisher, and the date of publication. For example:

Fleischman, Sid. By the Great Horn Spoon. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1963.

If you are not sure what to read:

• Ask your parents or your librarian what their favorite book was when they were your age;
• Ask your friends for their list of favorite books;
• Take the PCS reading list to your local library or book store and look for books.

Try to read books by different authors.

Try and read a nonfiction book about science or history.

Selected Books Recommended by the PCS English Curriculum Committee

The following books are listed by grade level, for students entering PCS in September. Although the recommendations are considered to be age appropriate, students and parents should feel free to choose books from anywhere on the list. Many of the books listed here are classics; children (and parents) of any age will enjoy them.
